Hello Reader, Dachshunds were originally bred to be small game hunters and fearless defenders. FUN FACT: That bark you hear when the doorbell rings? It’s part instinct, part loyalty, and 100% doxie. They’re alert. So if your pup turns into a little security system the second someone pulls into the driveway, just know, they’re not misbehaving. They’re doing what they were built to do. But… we also know constant barking isn’t ideal, especially when it feels like it happens every five minutes. Here’s how to keep peace at the door without shutting down their natural instincts: 🐾 Acknowledge it! Dachshunds want to be heard. Try saying, “Thank you, I see them,” in a calm voice. It sounds silly, but many pups calm down once they feel like their message was received. 🐾Pick a word or phrase that means “you did your job, now quiet.” It takes time, but they’ll start to understand when it’s time to stop. 🐾 Redirect the energy, and give them something else to focus on once the alert is over, like a chew toy, a place to go, or a command they know well. 🐾 If your dog barks at every car or person walking by, try covering lower windows or using a baby gate to limit access during high-traffic hours. You’re not trying to silence their instincts, you’re just helping them understand when the job is done. The more your dachshund trusts that you’ve got it handled, the less they feel like they need to handle it for you. And as always, if you’re not sure what’s normal or you just want some extra tips, we’re happy to help. Hit reply with all of your questions! With love (and a quieter doorbell), Sherry |
