A tired dachshund isn’t always a well-behaved one

Hey Reader

If you’ve ever taken your dachshund on a walk…
...only to come home and find them still bouncing off the walls,
You’re not doing anything wrong.

Truth Bomb: Physical exercise isn’t enough for this breed.

Dachshunds are thinkers.

They were bred to solve problems, hunt independently, and figure things out on their own.

So if their brain isn’t working, they’ll find ways to entertain themselves, usually in ways that drive you a little nuts (like barking at shadows or digging through laundry).

This is why mental enrichment is just as important as movement. It helps burn energy and builds a more balanced, calm dog.

Here are a few simple ways to work their mind (without exhausting yours):

Snuffle mats or food puzzles
Let them “hunt” for kibble using their nose. It taps into natural instincts and gives their brain something to focus on.

Hide and seek
Hide a toy or treat around the room and let them sniff it out. Even a quick 5-minute round makes a difference.

Teach new tricks (or refresh old ones)
Keep sessions short and fun, dachshunds love learning when they feel successful.

Keep up the routine
Keeping their routine sets up their expectations and allows them to understand boundaries.

This breed is sharp.

And when we treat them like clever little companions instead of just cute couch potatoes, they absolutely thrive.

Need ideas for enrichment toys or brain games we love? Just hit reply, we’re happy to share.

With love (and a mentally satisfied dachshund),
Sherry
